Santan: the most Malaysian liquid with four packaging lines.
Coconut milk is a national kitchen staple — and in terms of packaging, it's one of the most demanding liquids: fats that separate if left standing, proteins that sour quickly, and a flavor that customers instantly recognize when it goes off. Four packaging lines serve four market segments, each requiring different machinery.
The fundamentals of liquid filling — nozzles, viscosity, foaming — are described in Automatic liquid filling machine; This article maps out the specific pathways for coconut products.
Four routes, four machines
1. Aseptic UHT carton — shelf life 6-12 months
Santar is briefly heated at high temperatures, sterilized, and filled into aseptic cartons in a clean zone. This is the major supermarket brand channel. Highest capital investment, highest complexity (aseptic zone + carton forming) — territory of large contract manufacturers; most mid-sized producers purchase UHT co-packing services and focus their machinery on channels 2–4.
2. PE bag / hot-fill pouch — 75-85°C
Coconut milk is pasteurized and hot-filled into formed PE bags: the heat kills microbes on the inner surface of the packaging simultaneously. Cold shelf life: 2–4 weeks. This is the fresh supermarket and wholesale market channel. Technical note: hot-filled products require seals, hoses, and temperature-indicating sensors — piston or gravity-pressure filling from… liquid filling machine with temperature control; and homogenization before filling, otherwise the fat separates and customers complain of “lumpy coconut milk.”.
3. 10-50 ml liquid sachet — VFFS liquid
Single-use sachets for pastries and one-serving dishes: a vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine line for liquids forms, fills, and seals 30–60 sachets/min. The liquid must be medium-viscosity (200 ml of evaporated thick coconut milk diluted just enough to flow well); the technical aspects are the same as Tomato sauce packaging machine — Pulp products require large pistons and passages.
4. Instant coconut milk powder 15-40 g — VFFS auger
Spray-dried coconut cream with maltodextrin: powder sachets that customers dissolve themselves. Auger machine: 30–60 sachets per minute — worldwide. Automatic powder packaging machine. Hygroscopic coconut milk powder (strongly absorbs moisture) — a barrier film and air-conditioned sealing zone are essential; otherwise the powder will harden in the sachet by the second month.
| Path | Former | Shelf life | Incoming volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| UHT aseptic | Box of 200 ml – 1 L | 6-12 months (room temperature) | Large factory / co-pack |
| Hot-fill PE | bag 200 ml – 5 L | 2-4 weeks (cold) | Fresh supermarket |
| Liquid sachet | sachet 10-50 ml | a few months (preservative) | Retail/Cooking |
| Instant powder | 15-40 g sachet | 12+ months | export + retail |
Coconut oil: the cream's neighbor with its own rules
Virgin coconut oil (VCO) from the same mill requires a different setup: filling 50–250 ml bottles with a flow meter (high price per milliliter), light-proof bottles (VCO goes rancid in light), and no hot-fill — heat destroys “virgin” sales. Thin, expensive liquid — nozzle precision according to logic Honey packaging machine In the adjacent row: the value per milliliter requires a flow meter, not a rough volume estimate.
Three common coconut milk factory mistakes
- Filling without homogenization — fat separates in the bag; looks good on the first day, complaints in the second week.
- Hot-fill on a room-temperature machine — The seal hose failed within a month; buying a new temperature control unit from the start was cheaper than rebuilding it.
- Coconut milk powder without a dry zone — hygroscopic, absorbing moisture in the sealing zone; bag sticks, machine stops every hour during the rainy season.
Both streams — liquid and powder — sit in liquid packaging solutions and powder packaging solution.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which route should a small factory start with?
J: Sachet — liquid or powder, depending on your product. The capital cost of a single-lane VFFS is much lower than UHT, and the cooked/baked sachet market is large enough to test brands before investing in cartons.
Can one VFFS machine handle liquid and powdered coconut milk?
J: Not recommended — different dosers (piston/auger), different contact parts, and a full 4–6 hour swap with thorough cleaning. The two-product plant runs two dedicated machines.
Shelf life of preservative-free liquid sachets?
J: Short — a few days cold. A preservative or hot-fill is required for months; specify the target shelf life in the RFQ so that the process and film can be proposed accordingly.
Can aseptic cartons be rented for service?
J: Yes — the UHT co-packer receives bulk products and fills them under your brand. Minimum quantities are usually high; calculate the break-even point before investing in your own line.
