Viscosity determines everything in liquid filling.
The first question from a filling machine supplier isn't “how many bottles per minute?” — it's “how viscous is your liquid?” Mineral water, juice, coconut milk, tomato sauce, honey, and chili paste range from thin liquids to near solids, and each grade demands a different nozzle type. Pick the wrong one, and the machine will either drip on every bottle (thin liquid on a paste nozzle) or clog (paste on a thin nozzle).
This article maps out the three main nozzle families so your RFQ starts off on the right foot. An overview of the entire product range. liquid packaging solutions.
Three families of nozzles
1. Gravity and vacuum gravity — for thin liquids
Liquid flows from the upper tank through a nozzle into bottles; volume is controlled by liquid level and time. Suitable for water, clear juices, vinegar, and light cooking oil. 20–60 containers per minute on a rotary machine, lowest component cost, and no wear-sensitive parts. Limitation: stops with viscous liquids — gravity flow is inconsistent with thick honey.
2. Volumetric piston — for pastes and fine granular products
The piston cylinder measures the exact volume each cycle and pushes it into bottles: thick coconut milk, sauces, honey, chili paste, cream. Accuracy ±11% even at high viscosity, 20–40 containers/min. Malaysia note: lumpy products (sambal with solids, sauces with herbs) require a large-bore piston and valve designed for lumps — specify the largest lump size in the RFQ, not just the product.
3. Electromagnetic / mass flow meter — for high values per milliliter
The flow meter calculates the actual volume passing through, not a mechanical assumption — quality oil, extracts, pharmaceuticals. Accuracy ±0.51 TP3T and data for each bottle are recorded for traceability. Highest component cost; worth it when the value per milliliter is high or audits demand records.
| Liquid | Suitable nozzle | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Water, clear juice, vinegar | gravity | ±2% |
| Cooking oil | gravity / flow meter | ±1-0.5% |
| Coconut milk | gravity-pressure / piston | ±1% |
| Sauce, honey, paste | volumetric piston | ±1% |
| Premium oil, extract | flow meter | ±0.5% |
Three field problems that are bigger than speed
Foam. Juice and protein liquids foam when filled quickly — the 5 ml “full” bottle ends up over the actual capacity. Solution: a diving nozzle (fills from below the rising level) and two-stage speed: fast up to 80%, slow from there to full.
Drops after filling. The thin-liquid nozzle drips after each bottle, leaving floors slippery and weighing down. The anti-drip nozzle (needle valve or suck-back) is an inexpensive option that pays for itself in cleanliness and precision.
Hot and aseptic product. Hot filling (60–85 °C) for sauces and soups changes the seal, hose, and wiring — a standard-temperature machine will fail within months. Specify the filling temperature from the first inquiry.
Filling a bottle or a bag? Both are “liquid filling.”
Nozzle machines fill bottles and jars — that's half the market. The other half fills film bags: liquid VFFS lines form the bags and fill them in a single cycle for sauce sachets (5–30 g) and larger bags (200 g–1 kg). The sachet scale is described in Mini sachet bag packaging machine. Example of a real-world product field: Tomato sauce packaging machine and Honey packaging machine.
How many heads?
The number of nozzles on the rotary machine determines the speed: 4 heads ≈ 20–30 bottles/min, 6 heads ≈ 30–45, 8–12 heads ≈ 60–120. As with all lines, buy for the current 70% demand — expensive empty bottles are stored and purchased as needed later. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A machine for water and honey?
J: It's complicated — the two end viscosities of the scale require two nozzle technologies. The machine can swap heads, but that's an extra purchase and a format change; most plants separate the thin and thick zones.
Can glass and PET bottles be filled on the same machine?
J: You can use a container with adjustable handles—but glass is heavier and comes in different heights; check the height range and weight of the machine container before buying, and request a test with both of your containers.
What is the temperature control for frozen chocolate and coconut oil?
J: Heated tank and nozzle with thermostat control — standard option for products that freeze below 30°C. Specify the product's melting point in the RFQ.
How often is CIP cleaning required?
J: By product: milk and protein ingredients at each production stop; sauces and oils daily. Request a CIP (clean-in-place) line in the design — manually dismantling nozzles every day kills productivity.
