Chamber vs. nozzle vacuum machine: choose based on bag size and volume.

Chamber vs. nozzle vacuum machines: 20–60 second cycle, residual oxygen below 1–31 ppm, and bags from 100 g to 25 kg — selection chart by product, volume, and labor.

Two families of vacuum machines, two different economies

“Vacuum machine” on the RFQ form covers two different technologies. The chamber machine places the entire bag inside a vacuum chamber—air is drawn out of the chamber and the bag simultaneously. The nozzle machine inserts a suction nozzle into the open neck of the bag—the bag is moved, not the chamber. This one-sentence difference determines the machine's cost, speed, and the bag sizes it can handle.

A strategic comparison of vacuum versus vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine lines is already available. Vacuum packaging vs VFFS — the article answers “do we need a vacuum at all.” This one answers the second question: “which vacuum cleaner.” A depiction of the automatic vacuum lineup in Automatic vacuum packaging machine.

Chamber: bag goes into the box

The bag is placed in a sealed chamber; the pump draws air from the entire chamber until the pressure drops; the internal and external pressures of the bag equalize, then the sealing jaws close the bag before air is allowed back in. Results: the deepest vacuum (residual oxygen below 11 ppm), uniform compression, and the option of gas flushing (nitrogen for cheese and soft products — the bag does not fully adhere to the product).

Speed: 20–40 second cycles — single table 1–2 bags per minute, alternating dual-chamber 3–4 bags/min (operator loads one chamber while the second chamber is running). Bag size is limited by chamber size: the tabletop model accepts A4 bags, the floor model up to 50 × 40 cm. For meat, cheese, fish, and retail cuts — this is the standard machine.

Nozzle: suck the bag necks one by one

The suction nozzle is inserted into the neck of the open bag (pre-made 5–25 kg bags), the pump draws out the air, and the nozzle is withdrawn as the jaws or clips seal the bag. No chamber means no bag size limit — this is the only technology for 25 kg rice sacks, 10 kg factory beans, and bulk frozen foods.

Speed: 20–60 seconds per bag depending on size; a conveyor line with 2–4 nozzles reaches 4–8 bags per minute with two operators. The vacuum is shallower than in a chamber (residual oxygen 1–31 ppm) because the bag neck remains open during evacuation—enough for beans and grains, not for fresh meat for weeks.

Results table

Situation Choose Reason
Meat, fish, cheese — portions of 200 g to 2 kg Chamber (dwi) Internal vacuum + optional gas flush
Nuts, grains, rice — bags of 5–25 kg Nozzle A chamber of that size does not exist in practice.
Small kitchen production, 200 bags a day Table chamber Lowest cost, no conveyor
Bulk plant: 500+ large bags per day Multiple nozzle + conveyor Lowest per-bag wage
Soft products (cakes, crackers) Chamber + N2 Full crushing — specify product

Six questions that determine the model

  1. Largest bag size — immediately closes the chamber/nozzle debate.
  2. Targeted residual oxygen — below 1% (oxide-sensitive fat, meat) = chamber; 1–3% sufficient (roasted beans) = both.
  3. Day bag — under 200 tables; 200–2,000 dual-chamber; large bags 300+ conveyor nozzles.
  4. Wet or dry product — liquids boiled at low vacuum (coconut milk, marinades require a chamber with a liquid-stop function or a controlled suction level).
  5. Gas flush needed? — cheese, soft products, long-distance export: yes. Standard chamber supported; nozzle limited.
  6. Pump — capacity and oil — dry vs. wet pumps, service reach and maintenance kit prices. The pump is the heart of the machine; the jaw gasket wears out every 6–12 months with daily use.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a chamber table for 10 kg bags — bag not entering the chamber; bought twice in the first year.
  • Full vacuum on sharp products — fish bones and dry pasta puncture bags from the inside; lined bags or trays are required.
  • Ignoring pump oil — The oil-lubricated pump, without annual oil changes, gradually loses vacuum depth; QC doesn't seem to notice until customer complaints.
  • Estimating the catalog speed on a bag full of liquid — liquid level limits suction time; always test with the actual product.

Both of them sit in the extended family. automatic packaging machine; for retail dry products, the starting point solid packaging solution.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can the chamber make 25 kg bags?

J: A chamber that large technically exists but is rarely worth it — the nozzle wins out in terms of size for both cost and floor space.

Can you vacuum a zippered bag?

J: The zipper adds an extra layer of complexity to the seal — most flat-bag vacuum manufacturers then add the zipper via a separate zipper-closing machine on their premium line. Vertical Form Fill Seal vs Pre-formed Bag Explain the position of the zipper bag.

How often are jaw gaskets replaced?

J: Follow the running hours and product—oil every 3–4 months, dry every 6–12 months. Keep gasket stock; a 3-week order delay means the machine stops.

Nozzle and chamber — one machine, two modes?

J: It exists as a niche hybrid machine; most factories buy according to the dominant volume and outsource the other.
